Exactly 30 years since the first Toy Story film was released, establishing Pixar as a leading film company and introducing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the plot but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.

Surely, Pixar will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Connections from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
